Dietary fats

INTRODUCTION

In this section, you will get an insight of:

  • The effects of different types of dietary fats on blood cholesterol;
  • How to improve the dietary fat intake;
  • The role of nuts and fish/fish oil in CVD prevention

In adults, a total dietary fats intake between 20% and 35% of daily calories, is currently recommended1,2. Fat intakes exceeding 35-40% of calories should be avoided as they are generally associated with increased intake of saturated fat and calories. Dietary fats recommendations aiming at reducing CHD risk mainly focus on reducing the intake of saturated fats by replacing them with unsaturated fats1,3,4,5.
